Tweedmouth War Memorial

2015

Originally paid for by the residents of Tweedmouth through a public subscription this fine granite memorial was erected in the mid 1920s although the first known pictorial record is of the Prince of Wales laying a wreath at it on 16th May 1928. The memorial records the fallen from World Wars 1 and 2 in addition to the Falklands War but over the intervening years, weathering had resulted in the names becoming difficult to read with some letters missing altogether. The Trust organised the renovation, which involved a deep cleaning of the entire monument, re pointing of the base section, restoring damaged lettering and finally, individually hand painting all of the 2196 letters on the monument. The finished work now shimmers in the sun light and is once again a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives for their country.
