Bridge Street Photo Centre Photographs
This business had been in operation since 1952 and had kept all the glass plates and negatives (black & white and colour) which had been taken by the late Mr David Smith, his son, Ian and their employees. The collection spans over 60 years of their work as professional photographers in Berwick and the surrounding district. It is well indexed and includes photographs of local events – for example, dances and social occasions, crowning of the Tweedmouth Salmon Queen, Royal visits, Berwick Rangers Football Team, local weddings and the exterior and interior of well-loved old buildings. It is a unique collection of thousands of negatives which has been well preserved and is a wonderful pictorial record of events in North Northumberland and the Border area, complimenting the written reports found in local newspapers. This collection is an extremely valuable asset for the local area and will be an important resource for future generations wanting to know about the period.
Berwick Preservation Trust contributed to the purchase of these historical records and the subsequent exhibitions of these in The Gallery in The Granary in Berwick.
